Thomas Steven Holmberg

July 3, 1969 - July 22, 2020

Thomas Steven Holmberg, 51, beloved son of Tom and Lois (Hutchison) Holmberg died peacefully Wednesday, July 22, 2020, surrounded by his family at the Mahaska Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. “Tommy” was born July 3, 1969, in Columbus, Ohio, and came to Oskaloosa in 1975, where he attended school and graduated from high school in 1987. He loved sports and had the nickname “Happy.” He excelled in football and basketball and was invited to walk on the Iowa Hawkeyes Football Team and played in the 1987 Holiday Bowl. After graduating from the University of Iowa with a degree in psychology, Tom worked in various positions at Garden & Associates, Maytag Manufacturing, Ajinomoto Food Ingredients, and Vermeer Manufacturing until a tragic motorcycle accident in 2012 left him quadriplegic. Though life was a struggle for the last eight years, he covered his feelings well and was proud to manage to live in his own home with the help of many wonderful daily home health aides. On July 7, 2020, he suffered a cardiac arrest that resulted in his death on July 22. Tommy’s family includes his parents, Tom and Lois Holmberg; and brothers: Todd and Julie Holmberg of Waverly and their children, Levi, Abrahm and Josi Holmberg of Waverly; and Andy and Kristy Holmberg of Oskaloosa and their children, Jamie (Michael) Sorensen of Iowa City, and Lindsey and Cale Holmberg of Oskaloosa. In addition to his immediate family, Tommy is survived by his “Aunt Dottie” of Centertown, MO; cousins: Carmen and Matt; his guardian angel, Ronda; special friends, Cheryl and Lisa; and his “second mom”, Carol Beason. Funeral services for Tommy will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 27, 2020, at the Central United Methodist Church with Rev. Chad Lierman officiating. Burial will be in Forest Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1-6 p.m. Sunday at Langkamp Funeral Chapel, the family will be present from 2-4 p.m. to greet visitors. For your safety, the family requests that masks are worn, and proper social distancing is followed when attending these events. The service will be live-streamed on the Central United Methodist Church’s Facebook Page. Memorial contributions can be made to Central United Methodist Church, Mahaska Hospice Serenity House or your favorite charity.
