Nellie Meinders

Nellie Meinders: Nellie passed away Tuesday morning at Pleasant Park Estates Nursing Home in Oskaloosa at the age of 93 years, 3 months and 29 days. Her family includes a son, Raymond (Janice) Meinders; daughters: Eileen (Harold) Van Weelden and Janet (Tom) Kelderman, all of Oskaloosa; eight grandchildren: Kevin (Diana) Meinders of Pleasant Hill; Valerie (Russ) Sytsma of Oskaloosa; Brent Meinders of Los Angles, CA; Tim (Sali) Van Weelden of Marion, IA; Phillip Van Weelden and his fiancée, Kathy Ehler of Waukee; Patrick Van Weelden of Waukee; Barry (Tish) Kelderman of Eddyville and Roger Kelderman of Oskaloosa; seven great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter; brothers: George (Laura) Slagter and Henry (JoAnn) Slagter, both of Oskaloosa; Marion (June) Slagter and Don (Luetta) Slagter, both of Pella; and Melvin (Shirley) Slagter of Zellwood, FL; a sister, Effie (LeRoy) Sopher of Oskaloosa; a sister-in-law, Nellie Slagter of Oskaloosa and several nieces and nephews. Nellie Meinders, daughter of John and Anna Louwsma Slagter, was born March 19, 1913, in Byron Center, Michigan. The family moved to Iowa when Nellie was four years old and she attended country school through 8th grade. She was the third of fourteen children. As a young woman she helped Oskaloosa families with housekeeping chores. She married T.H. ""Tim"" Meinders Dec. 7, 1934, in Oskaloosa. Together they farmed first near Beacon and then in the Cedar/Fremont area. After Tim's death in 1983, Nellie moved into Oskaloosa. She lived in her own home until age 90, when she moved to Pleasant Park Estates Nursing Home. Nellie was a charter member of the Cedar Christian Reformed Church, where she also was a member of the Ladies Society. She was a former trustee for the Senior Citizen's Center in Oskaloosa. She loved serving coffee and treats to friends and family and also enjoyed caring for her flowers. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Tim on July 9, 1983; and three sisters: Tena DeHaan, Tressa Van Dusseldorp and Margaret Street; and four brothers: Jacob, Wilfred, John Jr. Slagter and a brother in infancy.
